Rumors in the twittersphere are saying the upcoming Range Rover Velar will be a more street focused Rover of Ranges and/or Lands. The traditional straight-edged roofline of many SUVs will be “cut” down forming a sort of “coupe” styling.
The Range Rover Velar will sit between the Evoque and the Range Rover Sport (basically an F-Pace with an additional $10k starting price). Enjoy the vein in your forehead as you think about how Jaguar is connected to a brand that only builds SUVs and built it’s own and now Land Rover is using Jaguar’s SUV to make the exact same size and style of SUV to do the same things a little more expensively.
The power of prestige!
The good news is that if you wanted an F-Pace with the 3.0T diesel then this will be the vehicle of your dreams! That’s 252 hp / 440 lb-ft and likely mpg ratings of 22 city / 30 hwy/ 26 mpg combined. Sounds freaking fantastic!!
Pretty much, for the US, F-Pace means 4-cyl diesels and 6-cyl gas engines. Velar will be 4-cyl gas engines and 6-cyl diesel. But of course the updated 4-cyl gas engine will make its way into the F-Pace and the Velar “HSE Dynamic” will have 6-cyls gas engines...

This is right, since the gap between the Evoque and the Sport in quite big. The F-Pace, even though it wears the Jaguar design fantastically well, doesn’t. And the “Jaguar needs to have a SUV to survive!” argument don’t even make sense since Jaguar/Land Rover is basically a single brand. Now the F-Pace will make even less sense since Jaguar will launch a Sportbrake version of the new XF

Hey, the F-Pace only had 8 months of sales last year and already accounts for almost 1/3 of Jaguars total sales. That’s pure money!
But this Range Rover Velar does make perfect sense for Land Rover, especially since no one shops the Discovery between Evoque and RR Sport, plus a new Defender would also be completely different. There really is a nice separation between Land Rover and Range Rover without spinning off anything. It’s really impressive!

Oh I don’t deny the F-Pace is a success, you can’t go wrong with a SUV these days. But I, at least, associate Jaguar with sedans, wagons and gt/roadsters, and LR with SUV and crossovers, when you remember that they are the same brand, usually sold at the same dealership, it looses sense. At least keep the F-Pace as the sporty one, give it exclusivity over the Supercharged V6 and the future SVR, and let the RR keep the diesel powertrains and the 4 cylinder gas engines
